Civil rights lawyer and scholar Sherrilyn Ifill is Howard University's inaugural Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Esq. Endowed Chair in Civil Rights. This appointment is a testament to Ifill’s distinguished career and outstanding contributions to the fields of law, civil rights, and social justice. Ifill most recently served as the seventh president & director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), the venerable civil rights litigation organization founded by Howard Law School alum, Thurgood Marshall. 

As the Vernon Jordan Chair, Ifill is focused on a multi-disciplinary approach to promoting the vision and values articulated in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution as the central source of America’s post-Civil War identity.

King Chair in Public Policy is the former Maryland lieutenant governor and the first Black person elected to MD statewide office.

Groundbreaking political figure Michael Steele is the Gwendolyn S. and Colbert I. King Chair Endowed Chair in Public Policy.  He develops programming to illuminate the intracacies of politics, voting, policy making, and civil service. In 2003, Steele made history when he became the first African American elected to statewide office in Maryland, making him the highest-ranking African American Republican elected to office and the only African American lieutenant governor in the nation at that time. He was selected to serve as chair of the Republican National Committee, becoming the first African American to lead a national political party, and was a founding member of the Republican Leadership Council.

Knight Chair in Race and Journalism is the Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of the 1619 Project and a MacArthur "Genius" Fellow.

Nikole Hannah-Jones is the Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of the 1619 Project and a staff writer at The New York Times Magazine. The book versions were instant #1 New York Times bestsellers. Her 1619 Project is now a six-part docuseries on Hulu. Hannah-Jones has spent her career investigating racial inequality and injustice, and her reporting has earned her the MacArthur Fellowship, known as the Genius grant, a Peabody Award, two George Polk Awards and the National Magazine Award three times. 

She also serves as the Knight Chair of Race and Journalism at Howard University, where she founded the Center for Journalism & Democracy. Hannah-Jones is also the co-founder of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting, which seeks to increase the number of investigative reporters and editors of color, and in 2022 she opened the 1619 Freedom School, a free, afterschool literacy program in her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa.
